Easter Holiday Bible Club
The week after Easter has been ‘Holiday Bible Club week’ since 1990, missing only one year. This year the children were introduced to the idea of ‘Wise or Foolish?’.
Three of Jesus’ parables were taught: the Wise and Foolish Builders, the Good Samaritan and the Rich Man and Lazarus. After the story time, the children did craft work based on the stories and played games before a final singing session.
Over the 3 nights, 49 children enjoyed Holiday Club and collected tickets for the prize giving on Friday night, when a good number of parents came and got a taste of what the children had been doing.
As a result of the club our Adventurers meeting has seen a big increase in numbers.
Keswick
The second annual weekend in Keswick took place 24-26th April. Thirty six people enjoyed a varied time together, staying at the Keswick Convention Centre.
All our meals were planned and cooked by Margaret and a team of helpers. We were very well fed!
On Friday evening we played a game and then watched a DVD about Caring for Life. CfL care for vulnerable and damaged young people in Leeds.
On Saturday morning some played Pitch and Putt in the park while others explored Keswick’s interesting market. A boat trip on Derwentwater in the afternoon started in sunshine but soon after most of our group had been dropped off half way round to walk part of the way back to Keswick, the rain came down in buckets. The launch was suspended and a very soggy and cold party eventually returned on foot to the Centre. A game of ‘Mr and Mrs’ after the evening meal cheered everyone up, with Hilary and Arnold being declared the ‘perfect couple’. The evening ended with a DVD about missionary work in Hungary and a time of prayer.
On Sunday morning we enjoyed a service in the Convention Centre which included a discussion session based on the story of Gideon. The weekend was an enjoyable time for all.

A Word from our Pastor
Advertising is a powerful weapon. Thousands of pounds are spent on billboards, TV, internet and newspaper adverts. The tobacco industry continued to advertise despite having to print on cigarette adverts ‘Smoking kills. Chief Medical Officer warning.’ They know thousands will ignore the warning in order to satisfy their addiction.
The first billboard was a tree; a most colourful tree. The tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes and to be desired to make one wise. The topical phrase used to advertise the tree read ‘The day you eat of it you will be like God’. Our first parents ignored the government warning ‘ You must not touch it or you will die’. Man has been addicted to sin ever since. You may hate your sin, but you go on sinning. You cannot break the habit. You know it will be the death of you but you are helpless to do anything about it.
There is however another tree. Calvary’s tree displays a glorious message - ‘Christ died for our sins’. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ you can be liberated from the tyranny and ruin of sin. The Methodist Charles Wesley wrote:
Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound by sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
What sin can never do, God has done; he sets the prisoner free.
Does Calvary’s tree carry a government warning? Yes it does. It reads ‘How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?’ Do not ignore the warning; to be ruled by sin is to be ruined by sin.
Would you like to know more? Pay us a visit; alternatively I will be happy to visit you. You’ll also find us at our literature table on some Saturday mornings during the summer. This is on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton just next to the White Swan pub—between 10:30 and 11:30.
