Magazine Walk PhotoWalking

The Easter Monday walk at Rivington was  such a success we decided to continue the experience on the May Bank Holidays. The first Monday found us a Worthington Lakes, then on Spring Bank Holiday we went to Haigh Hall. The weather was lovely for this last outing and a walk by the canal was followed by a picnic then a walk back through the plantations.

About 50 people enjoyed the annual BBQ at Arnold and Hilary’s home. The weather stayed dry—if  a little chilly.  Plenty of food and chat made up for lack of sunshine.

I was born in Scotland and raised in a Roman Catholic home. As a young man I forgot about Jesus for probably 10 years except when I was in any kind of trouble. I met my wife Aileen about 10 years ago. She was from a Christian home and I couldn’t understand why she chose to stay with me.  After a few years we got married and had two kids and everything was great except there was always a gap in my life which I couldn’t understand. I tried to fill this gap with different things, including the Catholic Church — but it didn’t fulfil my needs.

For 5 years I would attend church when invited by Aileen’s dad and sometimes go to the church her sister attended. I enjoyed going to these churches but always felt it wasn’t for me. I thought that the people who went to these churches were very nice people but that they were fanatics. About July 2004 I began to attend Aileen’s church regularly.

I would sit there every Sunday, just watching and listening to these people and my opinion of them changed very quickly. I now had massive respect for them and enjoyed the love that was shown by these wonderful people.

My own habits started to change dramatically, particularly my language and drinking habits. Now, instead of getting drunk every Sunday with my mates at the local pub, I found myself getting a bigger kick out of staying sober and going to church! As the weeks passed I found myself beginning a new relationship with God through prayer and worship. I cemented this relationship on 16th September 2004 at 3.15am in a hotel where I was staying for work. I woke about 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I lay there in the dark praying to God. After about an hour I felt a massive urge to be closer to God and that is when I got on my knees and asked God to come into my life and be at the centre of it always. I know He listened to me that night because of how my life has been since and the feeling that I constantly have inside me.

I was baptised in November 2004 by my father-in-law at his church. I felt this was a great honour because he had encouraged me from when I first became interested in the gospel. Being baptised was my way of showing my friends and fellow Christians that I had made my next step of commitment to God. I know that God is working in my life.

Charlie is now one of the leaders in our youth group.

A word from our Pastormagazine Clock Image

Time; Time is precious; Time is wealth.

As a boy I collected newspaper cuttings. One saying I still remember is ‘Time is the pinhead on which eternity revolves’. Your eternity is determined by your choices in  time. You keep promising yourself you will go to church. Weeks pass, months pass, years pass and you are still promising yourself!!

The Bible says ‘Now listen, you who say “Today or tomorrow will we go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes’.

Are you ready for eternity? ‘I tell you now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation’. Time and then eternity!

Why not come and join us at any of our services or see us at our literature table on Saturday mornings during the summer?  You’ll find our table on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton just next to the White Swan pub between 10:30 and 11:30.

End of Term Parties

All the children's activities ended with a ‘special’ of some kind.

  • Toddlers who were leaving to go to pre-school in September all received children’s Bibles. We’d love to see them start coming to Adventurers.
  • Adventurers brought their teddies for a teddy bears picnic in the back hall.
  • Discoverers had a barbecue at one of the leaders homes. The weather stayed fine and it was enjoyed by everyone.
  • The teens had an 80’s themed party with the appropriate dress being worn. They were all given Bibles too.

We hope to see them all return in September, whether to the same group or the one for the next age range.

Sunday School

Would you like your children to learn more about God, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Bible?

Then come along with them to the morning service at 10:45. During the service the infant and junior age children go into the back halls for a Bible story and to complete a worksheet, leaving you able to listen to our Pastor explaining a passage from the Bible and how it applies to our everyday life.

You’ll get a cup of tea or coffee at the end too.
